Toll roads Slovenia

In Slovenia, toll is required on motorways (avtocesta) and expressways (hitre ceste), which are identified by an A and H. A valid e-vignette is essential for travel on these designated toll roads.

The A1 motorway serves as the backbone of Slovenia’s motorway network.

The motorways can also be labeled with an E. This is the same motorway as indicated with an A, but E means it is part of a broader European network that spans multiple countries.

A valid vignette is required for the following sections:

  • The motorways including European roads: A1 (E57,E59,E70), A2 (E61, E70), A3 (E61), A4 (E59), A5 (E653).

  • The expressways: H3, H4, H5, H6, H7.

01. Exceptions

Some Slovenia toll-free motorways and express ways are an exception and do not require a vignette:

H2 between Maribor west and Tezno. H6 between Koper and Lucija. A2 between Jesenice and Vrba.

The Karawankentunnel (A2) is exempt from vignette obligation, but it does charge separate toll costs.

Toll regulations for lorries

In Slovenia, vehicles exceeding a total of weight of 3,500 kg, including lorries, are charged using a distance-based toll system rather than a fixed fee. The toll amount depends on factors such as the kilometers driven, the maximum permissible weight, the number of axles, the road category, and the vehicle's environmental classification. To comply with regulations, vehicles > 3,500 kg must be registered through Slovenia’s DarsGO system.

Avoid penalties: get your e-vignette in advance of your trip

Driving without a valid e-vignette may result in significant fines. Avoid the risk by ensuring you have the correct Slovenian vignette for your vehicle category before you start your journey.

Driving on toll roads in Slovenia without a valid e-vignette is not permitted and may result in an immediate fine. Therefore, make sure to purchase your vignette before starting your journey.

In Slovenia, vehicles under 3,500 kg must use an e-vignette linked to their license plate for toll road access. Cameras verify compliance, and fines are issued for vehicles without a valid vignette. Roadside checks further enforce the system. To avoid penalties, ensure you purchase the correct e-vignette for your journey before traveling on Slovenian motorways.

Yes, it is possible to transfer the Slovenian e-vignette to a different license plate, but only before the start of its validity period. The e-vignette is linked to the license plate provided at the time of purchase, but it can be changed before the start date. Please contact our customer service to request a change to your vehicle information.

Under Article 9 of the Toll Act in Slovenia, the following vehicles are exempt from toll charges:

  • Emergency vehicles: Including blue light vehicles.

  • Military vehicles: Operated by the Slovenian Army.

  • Humanitarian aid vehicles: Used for relief efforts.

  • Foreign military vehicles: Supporting national defense.

  • International peacekeeping forces: Vehicles used in peacekeeping missions.

  • Road operator vehicles: Belonging to toll road operators.

It is possible to change the start date after purchase, as long as the vignette is not yet valid (the start date has not started). You can adjust the start date of the vignette by contacting our customer service.

Once the start date has begun, it is no longer possible to modify the vignette. We recommend purchasing a new vignette to avoid fines.
